President, AIP Home Pros
October is here, and before we know it, Thanksgiving and Christmas will be right around the corner.
For many of us, this is the time of year when we start thinking about family gatherings, visitors, decorations, and everything else that comes with the holidays. But there's something I encourage families to think about before the holiday rush begins.
Is your home, or your parents' home, as safe as it could be?
Most of us don't give much thought to the little things around our homes until something goes wrong. A loose handrail, an uneven sidewalk, or a poorly lit hallway might seem harmless because we've lived with them for years. Unfortunately, those are often the very things that can lead to a preventable injury.
Start With the Front Door
Think about the last time you visited your parents or an older relative. Did you notice whether the steps were in good condition? Was there a sturdy handrail? Could you clearly see the walkway after dark? Here in Jacksonville, we don't have to worry much about snow and ice, but we certainly deal with rain, slippery walkways, uneven concrete, and outdoor lighting that doesn't always work as it should. Take a few minutes to look around the entrance. You might be surprised at what you notice.
Sometimes something as simple as securing a handrail or replacing a light fixture can make a real difference.
Don't Overlook the Bathroom
If there's one room in the house that deserves extra attention, it's the bathroom.
Getting in and out of a shower or bathtub can become more difficult as we age. Wet floors, slippery surfaces, and the absence of something sturdy to hold onto can create unnecessary risks.
One thing I often remind people is that towel bars are not grab bars. They're designed to hold towels, not support someone's weight.
Properly installed grab bars, improved lighting, and a secure bathing surface can make everyday activities safer without requiring an expensive bathroom renovation.
And today's safety products don't have to make your bathroom look like a hospital. Many are attractive, practical, and blend right into your home's existing design.
Take a Walk Through the House at Night
Here's a simple exercise.
Walk through your home after dark, particularly along the path from the bedroom to the bathroom.
Are there areas where you can't see clearly? Are there loose rugs, extension cords, or furniture that could become obstacles?
As we get older, changes in vision and balance can make nighttime trips more challenging.
Motion-activated nightlights, clear pathways, and properly positioned lighting are relatively inexpensive improvements that can help reduce those risks.
Remember That Independence Matters
One of the things I've learned working with seniors is how important independence really is.
Our parents and grandparents don't necessarily want someone telling them what they can and cannot do. They've spent their lives taking care of themselves and others.
And frankly, I understand that.
The goal isn't to take away someone's independence. It's to help protect it.
Sometimes that means making a few adjustments around the house. Other times it means recognizing that a task they've always handled themselves, like climbing a ladder or repairing a loose step, might be better left to someone else.
There's nothing wrong with asking for a little help.
A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way
Before the holidays get here, I encourage you to spend an afternoon looking around your home or visiting an aging parent with home safety in mind.
You don't have to tackle everything at once.
Start with the areas used most frequently. Address the obvious hazards first. Make a list of the little repairs you've been putting off.
And remember, improving home safety doesn't always mean spending a lot of money.
Sometimes the smallest improvements provide the greatest peace of mind.
